Micropiling

Micropile - Effective Ground Improvement Solution

Micropiles have been used effectively in many applications of ground improvement not only as working piles with high loads in constrained areas but also for strengthening the existing foundations. Having evolved more than 50 years ago, micropiles are now technically and economically viable solutions to problems of high vertical loads, lateral loading, high bending tolerance and seismic retrofit. They are one of the more efficient deep foundation systems available in the industry. They can tolerate very large loads for their small size when socketed in rock.

Micropile - Technical Competitiveness

With our rigs of various sizes, we are able to construct micropiles of sizes from just 75mm up to 300mm in soil and 90mm to 250mm in rock. We can construct piles in very constrained areas using our small drilling frame.

Our construction methods available include wash (recirculatory) boring using a drag bit, roller (tricone) bit for stiffer/harder soils or casing + shoe for drilling through buried timber and organic deposits. For rock, we employ the Down-the-Hole Hammer (DTH), which is a bottom driven self actuating hammer powered by an air-compressor which can penetrate all rocks including Grade I granite.

Underpinning

Existing buildings sometimes experience excessive settlement or bearing failure under their design loads or the existing building’s load is to be increased from structural expansion. The foundation of these buildings needs to be strengthened. Due to the building already in use and restrained space, the addition of micropiles to existing pilecaps are the only way to strengthen the foundation without any or much disruption to the existing building.

Our smallest drill frame is just 1m long, 600mm wide and 2.5m high which can be anchored into the ground or any structure rendering it useful for constrained sites with low headroom. Our small drilling rig is applicable in almost all cases with just the rig drilling in the pile point connected to our modified powerful hydraulic power-pack outside the building. Where a man can enter, it is possible for us to install a micropile there.

At GeoProfound Engineering, we provide modern and innovative micropile solutions such as;

Installation of high capacity micropiles in difficult places.

Drilling and installation of micropiles in any geological formation including rock socketing.

Prevention and arrest of settlement for completed buildings by underpinning.

Prevention for hillslopes slidingue to slope destabilization, by using soil nailing.

Strengthening soft & problematic ground by various means of grouting.
